Through January we worked on different problem solving strategies in Math. One of the group activities we used was a Place-mat activity. Groups received the problem read it over together and each person tried to solve it on their corner of the chart paper. Students shared with each other the strategy they used to solve the problem and then collectively put their best group answer in the center of the paper. We can then either have each group present their answers or do a gallery walk around the class looking at the strategies each group decided to use to solve the problem. The lesson then ends with a discussion and evaluation of the various methods used.
One of the problems we dealt with was Pascal’s Triangle.
Below, Rachel and Owen work hard at recording their ideas as the rest of their group contemplates their own answers.
Finally, the group presents. Here Lucas and Owen take the lead in explaining the group’s best answers.
